What credit cards should I pair with the Amex Gold Card?

The Amex Gold earns 4x Membership Rewards points at restaurants worldwide (up to $50,000/yr) and at US supermarkets (up to $25,000/yr), 3x on flights booked directly with airlines or through Amex Travel, and 1x on everything else. That last part is the gap. Everything that is not food or flights earns 1x, so the most valuable pairing is usually a no-fee card that earns 2% on everything. Heavy grocery households should also compare a 6% supermarket card, and drivers a card that earns more on gas.

Suggested pairings by spend pattern

Everyone who keeps the Gold

Add a no-fee 2% card for everything that is not food or flights. This is the biggest and simplest gain. The Gold earns 1x on most non-food, non-travel purchases, and a 2% card doubles that with no annual fee.

Heavy grocery household

Compare the Gold with a 6% supermarket card at your grocery total. Note: the Blue Cash Preferred's 6% rate applies up to a published annual cap — verify on americanexpress.com. Transfer-partner users may still prefer the Gold's points for the upside on redemption.

Drivers

A card with a gas bonus beats the Gold's 1x at the pump. The Blue Cash Preferred earns 3% at US gas stations; other options exist at higher rates.

Transfer-partner users

Stay inside Membership Rewards where you can. Points from a second Amex points card pool with the Gold's, so a flat-rate Amex card extends the category coverage inside the MR ecosystem.

What this is not

It is not a claim that everyone who holds the Gold needs to add another card. If you use all four credits and spend heavily on food and flights, the Gold may already be the best card in your wallet with no additions needed. The pairings here are for the spend categories the Gold does not cover well.

How SavvX decides

SavvX runs your real Plaid transactions against the catalog and shows what adding a card would change for you, net of its annual fee. If a second card does not pay for itself on your spending, it will not recommend it.

Is your annual fee worth it?

Pick the cards you hold and a rough monthly spend. No bank connection. You get a grade and a verdict for each card.
